On August 8, 2023, wildfires started in Maui and Hawaii Counties in the State of Hawaii and quickly grew, wreaking catastrophic damage and destruction on homes and businesses.
Tragically, these wildfires have led to at least 100 deaths and nearly $6 billion in damages. According to a November 14, 2023 report in The New York Times, four people remain missing.
In Maui County, the wildfires and hurricane-strength winds cut off power and disrupted 911 and other communications services on parts of the island. More than 2,200 buildings have been destroyed or damaged, and thousands of people have been displaced in the country’s deadliest wildfire in modern times. This is impacting an area with the highest prevalence of food insecurity in the state.
In response, the President declared a state of emergency for Maui and Hawaii Counties, allowing federal authorities to provide disaster relief.
In addition, those impacted by the Hawaii wildfires can now receive free wireless lifeline service through Life Wireless.

About Life Wireless
Life Wireless offers government assisted wireless services to low-income families and individuals in Hawaii. Qualified customers receive free cell phone service. Certain residents may be eligible for a free cell phone. We offer Lifeline discounts to qualified Hawaii subscribers who meet certain eligibility requirements, such as government subsidies or a household income that is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Your FREE Lifeline benefit is limited to one per household and cannot be combined with any other Lifeline offer.
The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is a new federal free government phone program committed to bringing connectivity to low-income Americans. Qualifying households can get connected by answering a few questions and submitting your eligibility documents. To receive a free smartphone and free monthly phone service, you or anyone in your household, a child or dependent included, must meet the income-based or program-based eligibility guidelines. The program is limited to one ACP benefit per household.
Acceptable Eligibility Subsidies
The standard eligibility programs that may be used as proof of subsidy include Food Stamps / Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Section 8 Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicaid, The Veterans Pension or Survivors Pension, Income at or below 135% of Federal Poverty Guidelines.
